其中，重灾区就是：on the contrary; by contrast; on the other hand... 的混用.

原因很简单，都是中文惹得祸。这几个词的中文都有“相反”之义。

(1) Contrast: v./ n.

本身含义是: show a difference when compared （通过对比）显出差异; 形成对照

写作常用词组：

by contrast; in contrast to/with ...

与..相比，体现差异性;不同

比如：

* She had almost failed the exam, but her sister, by contrast, had done very well.她考试差点不及格, 而她的妹妹相比之下考得很好.* In contrast with their system, ours seems very old-fashioned.我们的制度与他们的相比, 显得过于守旧了.

(2) Contrary: n./adj.

本身含义是：the opposite, 反面，对立面，相反

写作常用词组:

on the contrary./ to the contrary

与此相反；与先前的想法相反

*It doesn't seem ugly to me; on the contrary, I think it's rather beautiful.

我觉得它并不丑, 恰恰相反, 它挺美.

* When I first met him, I thought he was a modest and gentle person. On the contrary, he is arrogant and ruthless.

(3) on the other hand:

含义是：used to introduce a contrasting point of view, fact, or situation

用来引出一个相互矛盾的观点，事实或者情况

这个词组经常会搭配使用:

on the one hand... on the other (hand)...

* On the one hand, I faced the prospect of losing my day-to-day contact with the kids. On the other, I faced sacrificing my career.

一方面，我面临着失去跟*日常联系的可能。另一方面，我面临着牺牲我的职业生涯。

* On the one hand, mobile phones are very useful and can save lives. On the other hand, people seem to use them for the most pointless and unnecessary calls.

一方面，手机非常有用。另一方面，人们似乎用手机总是打无意义的电话。

划重点

从以上的3组例子中，我们可以看到,

by contrast, 强调通过 2个事物之间的对比，体现不同.

on the contrary, 强调与先前对事物想法相反、不是真实的.

on the other hand, 用来表示同一个事物的2个相矛盾的点.

⚠️ 注意标点符号正确运用。以上词组都是链接词组，不能直接连接2个单句。

举例:

1. 小王英语很好。By contrast, 小李数学很好。

2. 我以为小王英语不好。On the contrary, 小王英语其实特别好。

3. On the one hand, 小王英语很好，帮助她获得了很多英语比赛奖励。On the other hand, 学英语又占据了她很多学习时间。
